About OrthoIQ

OrthoIQ is an MIT-founded medical technology startup developing intelligent surgical tools for orthopedic procedures. Our systems provide real-time sensing and feedback to surgeons, helping improve implant fixation, reduce complications, and improve surgical outcomes.

We are building a new class of smart orthopedic instrumentation, combining mechanical systems, sensing, and data to bring intelligence into the operating room.

Role Overview

We are seeking an Electrical Engineering Intern to help develop the sensing and electronics systems behind our next-generation orthopedic surgical tools.

This is a highly hands-on role where you will own substantial portions of hardware development, from circuit design through prototyping and testing. Interns should expect to work independently while collaborating with our engineering team on architecture and design reviews.

Responsibilities

  • Embedded electronics / PCB architecture and board design

  • MCU/processor selection based on sensing + algorithm requirements

  • Embedded C/C++ and real-time firmware

  • Sensor interfaces, ADCs, signal conditioning, communications, and power electronics

  • Port validated signal-processing/ML algorithms onto embedded hardware

  • Real-time control systems / closed-loop or “fly-by-wire” architecture

  • Motor/actuator control and hardware–software integration

  • Design for reliability, EMC, power, thermal constraints, and medical-device development

Desired Qualifications

  • Pursuing or earned a BS/MS in Electrical Engineering or related field

  • Experience with circuit design and PCB development

  • Familiarity with embedded systems or microcontrollers

  • Experience with sensors, instrumentation, or signal processing preferred

  • Hands-on prototyping experience (oscilloscopes, DAQs, soldering, etc.)

  • Comfortable working independently in an early-stage startup environment

Design an electrical sensing system entirely from scratch for implant alignment in total hip replacements. This doesn’t exist yet, so we’re using a placeholder picture!
