Electrical Engineering Intern

Location: Cambridge, MA
Duration: Fall 2026 (10–12 weeks)

About OrthoIQ

OrthoIQ is an MIT-founded medical technology startup developing intelligent surgical tools for orthopedic procedures. Our systems provide real-time sensing and feedback to surgeons, helping improve implant fixation, reduce complications, and improve surgical outcomes.

We are building a new class of smart orthopedic instrumentation, combining mechanical systems, sensing, and data to bring intelligence into the operating room.

Role Overview

We are seeking an Electrical Engineering Intern to help develop the sensing and electronics systems behind our next-generation orthopedic surgical tools.

This is a highly hands-on role where you will own substantial portions of hardware development, from circuit design through prototyping and testing. Interns should expect to work independently while collaborating with our engineering team on architecture and design reviews.

Responsibilities

  • Design and prototype electronics for surgical sensing systems

  • Develop and test embedded sensing systems (force, vibration, or other instrumentation)

  • Create schematics, PCB layouts, and prototype boards

  • Integrate electronics with mechanical prototypes

  • Conduct benchtop experiments and analyze sensor performance

  • Document designs and testing results

Desired Qualifications

  • Pursuing or earned a BS/MS in Electrical Engineering or related field

  • Experience with circuit design and PCB development

  • Familiarity with embedded systems or microcontrollers

  • Experience with sensors, instrumentation, or signal processing preferred

  • Hands-on prototyping experience (oscilloscopes, DAQs, soldering, etc.)

  • Comfortable working independently in an early-stage startup environment

What You'll Gain

  • Ownership of real hardware that may enter clinical testing

  • Experience developing electronics for regulated medical devices

  • Exposure to interdisciplinary medical device design

  • Close collaboration with experienced engineers and surgeons

Application:

Please submit your resume to audrey@orthoiqinc.com. A portfolio (doesn’t have to be polished, can even be a slide deck!) is recommended, but not required.

Potential projects you’ll work on!

Help refine our AccuCut to have user-friendly dials and knobs perfect for the operating room.

Our Smart Broach measures if implants are secure in the bone! You will assess different sensor types, create custom electronics, and validate their use in simulated bone.

Design an electrical sensing system entirely from scratch for implant alignment in total hip replacements. This doesn’t exist yet, so we’re using a placeholder picture!
